A practical and theoretical research into the value of knowledge, the value of intellectualism, and the value of dance within 21st Century academia. I created this piece through mathematical scores of sound, movement, and space to illustrate the readily dismissed understanding of dance as having any kind of intellectual pursuit besides simply 'moving'.

Process

The score was created based on a reference list of books and articles we had read over the course of the 3 year undergraduate degree. This was broken down into phonetic sounds, syllables and numbers to create a score that represented the body’s individual web of knowledge.

The paper on the floor was a printed portion of the reading we read during our three year degree, laid out to be danced over. The projected screen of numbers was the same as the movement score being followed. A white shirts and brogues were worn to avoid adding extra connotations to the body.

Design

The sound is a layering of recordings of Phoebe’s voice. The idea was to have the score of the choreography all emanating from one body of knowledge.
